The profit or loss from the sale of stocks, bonds, and other investments, or the difference between the purchase price and the sale price. Mutual fund investors must adjust their purchase price to account for the reinvestment of any distributions made by the fund, among other things. Gains on assets held less than one year are said to be short-term, while gains on assets held for more than one year are long-term.
